How to Turn on or off Tailored Experiences on Windows 10
By Timothy Tibbetts |
Tailored Experiences on Windows 10 allows Microsoft to get information from you to deliver personalized tips, ads, and recommendations. Many people would call this telemetry, or even spying. In this guide, we show you how you can enable or disable Tailored Experiences.
Tailored Experiences can be disabled in Settings or with the Registry Editor, Group Policy Editor, or with a third-party app. Using Windows 10 Settings is the simplest way, while Group Policy or Registry is for multiple or remote computers and third-party apps are for not only disabling Tailored Experiences but many other tracking aspects of Windows 10.
1: Settings
Click on Start > Settings > Privacy > Diagnostic and Feedback. Uncheck the box next to Tailored Experiences.
Scroll down while you're here and click Delete next to Delete Diagnostic data.
2: Group Policy Editor
Open Group Policy Editor and navigate to User Configuration > Adminstrative Templates > Windows Components > Cloud Content
Double-click on Do not use diagnostic data for tailored experiences.
Click on Enabled and Apply.
3: Registry Editor
Open the Registry Editor and copy and paste or navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Privacy.
On the right window, double-click on TailoredExperiencesWithDiagnosticDataEnabled and change the Value data to 0.
4: Third-Party Apps
We wouldn't download a third-party app to change one setting, but rather to look at all of the telemetry and spying that Windows 10 includes and disable many more of these types of settings. There are many of these apps available; however, here are our favorites that have been recently updated. We wouldn't risk running an app that hasn't been updated in years due to the many changes in Windows 10.
Many of these apps have video tutorials from MajorGeeks included.
O&O ShutUp10 is a privacy tool that provides you with full control over which functions in Windows 10 you choose to use and how far data gets shared. Video tutorial available.
W10Privacy can display typical Windows 10 security settings that can be activated as well as deactivated within the program. It also allows importing and exporting of your changes. Video tutorial available.
Win10 Spy Disabler helps you to disable Windows services and programs used to track your activity and to collect data about your usage, disable telemetry and data collection. Video tutorial available.
Windows10Debloater removes all of the bloat of Windows 10 and its traces while giving you the option of reverting any changes if needed.
