Paint Shop Pro Says "Browse for Folder - Please Choose a User Directory"
By Timothy Tibbetts |
Paint Shop Pro is known to break after a Windows Update by asking you to select a folder. The problem is most common with Paint Shop Pro 7. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not work, but there are two possible fixes.
It appears that the problem is due to how Windows has changed the properties of the folder permissions for C:Program Files (x86)Jasc Software Inc while updates are pending.
Here are the only two solutions:
1: Update Windows
This problem almost always means you have a Windows Update pending. Don't select a folder, but close the window asking you to do so.
Go to your Control Panel, Windows Updates (or Update & Security) and Check for updates to see if you have a pending update. Remember, even if it shows you're up to date, check for updates. This happened to us months after writing this article, and sure enough, there was an update after we checked. We rebooted, and Paint Shop Pro was fine afterward.
2: Choose a Different Folder
When Paint Shop Pro asks for a folder, you can choose any folder, and it will work. For example, select a folder somewhere out of the way. We used C:UsersYour UsernameDocuments, but we also created a folder called Paint Shop Pro in Documents to cut down on the clutter as there are numerous sub-folders involved. Also, by doing this, you can always try and delete that folder later and see if Paint Shop Pro works properly after the next large Windows Update. You can restore the files from the Recycle Bin if it does not.
Again, we've had this happen after the Fall and Spring updates (and more since this article was written) and finishing the updates solved our problem like it never happened.
