What Does HODL Mean?

HODL is an internet acronym that many people might not be familiar with.

HODL is an acronym for Hold or Hold on For Dear Life.

If you've seen hodl in your travels, odds are you were probably recently browsing one of the many cryptocurrency communities.



Hodl is another way of saying to hold your crypto and don't sell it, especially if the price is plummeting. If you buy and hold cryptocurrency, you would be known as a HODLer.

Of course, this makes no sense without knowing the origins.

In 2013 a user going by the name GameKyuubi, who admitted to enjoying some fine whiskey at the time, posted I AM HODLING, an obvious typo.

He later tried to correct his mistake, which didn't go well and within hours was the source of many new memes.

“I type d that tyitle twice because I knew it was wrong the first time. Still wrong. w/e”

And that's all it takes to suddenly accept HODL as something you might type as easily as LOL. If you have a spell checker in place, you might even have a hard time using it.



HODL never took off beyond the cryptocurrency community but is easily recognized in that community.
