Why Windows 10 Isn't the Last Version of Windows

By Timothy Tibbetts

on 06/15/2023

With all of the press about the leaked version of Windows 11, one question continues to surface - Didn't Microsoft say Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows?

No, Microsoft never said Windows 10 would be the last version.

The confusion came from the Tiles, Notifications, and Action Center presentation about Windows 10 at Microsoft Ignite in May of 2015.

Jerry Nixon, a Microsoft developer, commented:

“Right now, we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10,” Nixon continued. “And it’s really brilliant. So I can say things like, yeah, we’re working on interactive tiles, and it’s coming to Windows 10 in one of its future updates, right.”

Because he's a developer and not the boss, his comment can't be taken as fact. It's most likely he wouldn't be allowed to announce plans, and if he were, it probably wouldn't be at a presentation about Tiles, Notifications, and the Action Center. Microsoft didn't help by remaining mum on the comment. The more we listen to the discussion, we believe that he misspoke, left out a word or two, or tried to segue into the next topic.

For example, when discussing Windows 10, he said, "All the stuff that’s coming, because even though we were announcing Windows 8.1, we were all really working on Windows 10,” Nixon said at the time. “It’s sort of a bummer in its own way. But that’s not what’s happening today."

We'll have our answers on June 24th.
