How to Add and Remove 'Install CAB' to the Context Menu in Windows 10
By Timothy Tibbetts |
If you find yourself installing .cab files regularly, you can add "Install CAB" to your Context Menu. CAB files are provided by Microsoft, most commonly for Windows Updates before they are officially released. With a simple registry hack, we can add or remove this option.
The easiest way to do this would be to download the registry tweak.
If you'd like to do it yourself, here's the code you need. Copy and paste the following 2 bits of code into your favorite text editor and save as a REG file (install cab.reg, for example).
Add "Install CAB" to the Context Menu:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellRunAs]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellRunAs]
@="Install"
"HasLUAShield"=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellRunAsCommand]
@="cmd /k dism /online /add-package /packagepath:"%1""
Remove "Install CAB" to the Context Menu:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellRunAs]
That's it!
Note: If you do not see the "Install" command when you right click on a CAB file, chances are you have some other app that takes over that extension's association such as WinRAR as by default, WinRAR takes over that file extension association. To resolve this, uninstall WinRAR then reboot, now confirm that you have the "Install" command when you right click on a CAB file. You can then re-install WinRAR but when the setup ends, and you see a list of the file extensions it handles, uncheck the "CAB" extension, so WinRAR does not associate itself with that extension.
