How to Add Timeline or TaskView to the Windows 10 Context Menu

By Timothy Tibbetts

Did you know you could add the Timeline or TaskView to your context menu? TimeLine was added to the Windows Spring update, so anyone using an older version of Windows will see TaskView, instead of Timeline. Find out more about using Windows TimeLine here.

Be sure to create a restore point or at least back up your registry before proceeding.

If you prefer, this can be applied with a registry hack we created - Add Timeline to the Windows 10 Context Menu.

Press the Windows Key + R and type in regedit.

Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\

Note that the first group of keys beneath shell start with a period, so you need to scroll past all of those to find the shell folder.

Right-click on the shell folder and select New > Key and name it Timeline if you're using Windows 10 1803 or later or name it Taskview if you're using Windows 10 1709 or older.

Now, right-click on the TaskView folder and select New > Key and name it Command.

Click on the Command key and look for the Default string to the right pane and double-click on that.

Under Value Data, enter explorer shell:::{3080F90E-D7AD-11D9-BD98-0000947B0257} and click on OK.

That's it! Just right-click on your desktop to be sure it works correctly.

If you change your mind, restore your registry or from a restore point, as we mentioned earlier or navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\TimeLine and delete the TaskView or Timeline folder you created.
