How to Manually Remove Program Entries from the Apps & Features List

By Timothy Tibbetts

on 07/18/2023

There may come a time when you find that you've uninstalled a program in Apps & Features (Windows 10) or Add & Remove Programs (Windows XP, 7, Vista, 8) but the entry is still there. This problem happened when a registry entry wasn't correctly removed during the uninstall. Also, you might be able to protect an app from being uninstalled by removing the entry.

Because we're going to delete a registry key, we recommend you back up your registry first.

Open the Registry Editor and paste Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ into the search bar.

You will notice a bunch of random entries using letters and numbers that look similar to {E9B9A1A5-6398-4C99-8FDE-10794F6505C5}. Also, near the end of the list, you'll see other installed programs by name.

Hopefully, the app you want to remove is at the bottom of the list, but if not, you'll need to click on the long-named registry entries and look for the program's name in the left window under DisplayName.

Once you locate the item, delete the corresponding key on the left side.

Open your Control Panel and verify that the entry was removed.
