Is PornHub Safe?
By Timothy Tibbetts |
PornHub is the largest adult website online founded in 2007 out of Canada with offices or servers located in San Francisco, Houston, New Orleans, and London. They were purchased in 2010 by MindGeek, who owns quite a few pornographic websites. But, is PornHub safe to use?
To answer the question and set the stage, let's discuss a little bit about PornHub.
It might surprise you to know that PornHub could be considered philanthropic being involved in breast cancer awareness, saving bees, and environmental issues. The Susan G. Komen Foundation has refused donations from PornHub, but other foundations have been glad to accept their donations. After all, most foundations are businesses themselves.
Part of the problem for larger organizations is most likely the porn-related themes they use to raise awareness.
Save the Boobs was for cancer research. While that name isn't offensive, it's the video categories people needed to watch to raise money that probably turned some off.
Beesexual was about saving the bees. They created a new video genre featuring bees pollinating and using voice-overs from famous porn actors. A bit weird for my tastes.
Gives America Wood was for tree planting (environmental).
Now that you know more than you ever needed to know about a porn site, the answer is that PornHub is one of the largest and most trustworthy porn sites out there. How large? About 90 million a day or over 30 billion, that's with a b, a year.
PornHub has publicly acknowledged that they know their types of advertising is something attractive to malicious advertising, and they work hard to thwart that. In 2017 Pornhub discovered a potential ad-based malware attack and was able to prevent it before any users were affected. Many of the "legitimate" ads are links to other pornographic websites that require a fee to view their content. Or, so I've heard.
Most people know not to click ads on porn sites, but that can happen by mistake (design). You will usually find ads on the side, bottom, above a video, and of course, popups. There are also autoplay video ads.
If you use PornHub regularly, you can avoid the biggest problem with any porn site - ads. PornHub offers a Premium account for $9.99 a month or a discounted rate of less than $100 a year with a 7-day free trial. It's a smart move to offer an ad-free version being aware that their readers (lol) are aware the ads are of questionable content.
You also get premium high-definition content, 1080p and 4k videos, virtual reality, and DVD streaming.
Of course, most of us (you) don't spend more than 5 minutes on a porn site, so be careful to avoid the ads. Many of the ads link to other pornographic websites who also want you to subscribe and many who don't offer any free content.
By the way, if you subscribe to PornHub or tolerate their ads, you can certainly whitelist MajorGeeks.
No wrists were injured while researching this time-consuming bit of investigative journalism.
