What Is the EFSTMPWP Folder and Can You Delete It?

By Timothy Tibbetts

If you noticed a folder named EFSTMPWP, you might be wondering where it came from and if you can delete it. Here's all you need to know.

If you have the EFSTMPWP folder on your computer, then you probably ran PowerShell and Cipher to wipe free space on your hard drive.

The EFSTMPWP is created as a temporary folder, and Microsoft named it something no one understands. In a perfect world, Cipher will remove the temporary files in that folder when finished, but if not, we've seen reports of people having well over 50GB of data inside the EFSTMPWP folder.

If you want to delete it, go ahead. As we mentioned, Cipher should remove the folder and its contents when finished, but sometimes it doesn't.
