The Day of the Dead is a holiday meant to honor the dead, unlike Halloween, which is more about scares. Although the celebration pays tribute to the deceased, it also involves giving gifts such as candy sugar skulls, sharing traditional pan de muerto with loved ones, and writing lighthearted and often irreverent verses in the form of mock epitaphs dedicated to living friends and acquaintances, known as Calaveras literarias.
