MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts MP3 files so that they have the same volume.
I was hunting for a program to make sure all my MP3’s were the same volume. I have amassed a collection since the 90’s and some have really high volume and some have really low volume. I had no need for an entire complicated suite; I just wanted to do this one thing. Luckily I asked on our MajorGeeks Facebook page and was pointed to MP3Gain. It does exactly what I needed in an open source package. Simply drag and drop or add a folder, analyze to see what the gains are and set a default gain. You can simply use the default 89.0 volume and in minutes you are good to go. Having never even seen the program before, I think it would be easy for anyone to use. It’s not a tool you need every day but when the time comes that you want to normalize the volume on all your MP3’s then this is the answer. Perfect!
It does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear.
Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the MP3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.
