Trend Micro RansomBuster protects your computer from all types of ransomware adding an additional layer of security to your computer.
Initial setup could use some work. You need to select folders to protect with only the Documents folder protected by default. We'd like to see the usual suspects, Video, Photos, etc. added to the default list making it easier for those who don't know where to begin or what to protect. Trend Micros own ransomware definition page says "Once executed in the system; ransomware can either lock the computer screen, or, in the case of crypto-ransomware, encrypt predetermined files." Of course, documents are a big target, so maybe we're splitting hairs here. Regardless, we suggest you add at least your Photo or Pictures folders to the protected folders. The entire drive is not selectable.
Keep in mind this is a Freemium product meaning you have to purchase if you want to protect over two folders. We found you can get around this by deleting the Documents folder and adding your C:\Users\YourName and C:\Users\Public folders allowing you to protect all Pictures, Documents, Music, Videos, and more. Purchasing Trend Micro Maximum Security for $39.95 offers all the protection.
While testing, RansomBuster tried to block svchost.exe so we have some concerns here about how accurate it is and how much time you'll need to spend getting it customized.
Log files are available to view Folder Shield and Ransomware activity. Logs can be exported.
We did receive a popup while using that offered to purchase Trend Micro Maximum Security and we hope that isn't a recurring theme.
If you're concerned about Ransomware, Trend Micro RansomBuster can protect your most important data for free. Of course, so would a good back up.
You can only select two folders to protect.
