You can choose file associations, web plugins, file associations, context menu items, and a few more during the installation. It installs very quickly, usually within a minute. VLC does not transmit or collect any personal data, but it can retrieve information about your media if you like. You are given the option to do this or opt-out immediately after installation. You can also change this later under Tools, Preferences.
